In 1967 Mrs Judith Starky of the 'Pinaroo' cattery imported the first pair of Birmans into Australia. These were Gr. Ch. Stacpoly Kharma (Ch. Pipo du Clos Fleuri x Paranjoti Praha Shigatse, a sealpoint female (Ch. Pipo du Clos Fleuri x Ch. Osaka de Lugh) bred by Mrs Fisher and born 23.8.67. These cats formed the foundation stock of Australia's Birmans and were then followed by more English imports (mainly because Australia is Rabies-free and can only import from other Rabies-free countries, although cats still have to be quarantined.

1888/89 was when the first full generation red series Birmans in Victoria, and chocolate and tabby points are now making an appearance and Julie Winner has now imported the first lilac point stud "Schwechinthe Chindwin" bred by Mrs Brigliadori (England).

Dr Tait's imports in 1970 played an important part in the progressive breeding and the male - Gr.Ch. Smokeyhill Thai Phong is now owned by Mr Colin Mackenzie (Khadine cattery) who has since imported Dubrova Chia, who gave birth to eight kittens and was bred by Mrs Pam Collins. For more information about the history of Birmans, we recommend Vivienne Smith's " The Birman Cat Worldwide" 2nd edition.
